The Time Between

It feels slightly strange writing a post about staying home, on a website that’s devoted to travel. Some, after all, might not feel that those months you spend going about your day-to-day could ever be quite as glamorous or as exciting as the few weeks you spend in a year trekking out on a new adventure, lying on a beach in a favourite destination, or whatever form it is your travel is likely to take. In fact, there are people who do everything they can to avoid that daily grind between trips: they can travel from place to place for months, years even.

Me, though, I’m a big fan of the time between.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m likely to leave on a moment’s notice if someone offers me an opportunity to go somewhere I’ve never been. I’ll say good-bye to my loved ones, hop on an airplane and see what it is there is to see. I’ll take in the new experiences, thrive through them. But then I’ll come home again, and I’ll find out what I missed when I was gone, and I’ll genuinely wish I was here to see that too. Because I’ll remember that experiences are found not only in exotic locations, but in the times between as well.

And I’ll rejuvenate in that. Until it’s time to leave again.
