The travel ritual part 2

I’ve learned how to pack. I figured out how to make sure certain things don’t get too wrinkled (tissue paper is the secret) and how to make sure certain things don’t take up space (socks and underwear always go in last and fill in the corners) and how to make things fit better (roll up items). But the problem is shoes.

When you travel to a warm destination, it’s a little easier, since the shoes are flatter and easier to pack. But when you go to a cooler destination how do you pack boots? Even though I try to choose one pair, I always get so sick of those boots when travelling. I fondly look at other women’s boots and wish for my other boots – my short black ankle boots with a tassle or or chesnut red boots with the great heel or those purple knee high boots that I used to wear all the time. I wish I had brought the bigger suitcase and brought another pair of boots.

On a recent trip I realized that to survive this ongoing desire for my boots, you buy a pair while travelling. I witnessed a colleague rush out to a store with a sale and find a pair of shoes that she wore that night. They were stylish and sexy, green and white silk evening shoes. We gathered around her to compliment and comment. All night, we were all a bit jealous, wishing we had bought something new that day in the brief hour we had to ourselves. Of course by the end of the night, our colleague was hobbling, her feet sore, a possible blister and definitely wanted to take off the shoes. But our jealous natures remained, wishing we had been the girl to show off her latest shoe purchase bought on the fly.

So I continue the struggle of trying to learn how to pack better, how to choose wisely, and to make more room for shoes. Don’t get me started on handbags.
